On this matter, the Maldives government had also suspended its three ministers from their posts on January 7.
Maldives President Mohammed Muizzu, on his first visit to China amid a diplomatic row with India, on Thursday (January 11) said Beijing said it ‘firmly opposes external interference’ in Maldives’ internal affairs and respects the island nation’s Supports it in maintaining sovereignty and independence.
An agreement was reached between the two countries to protect their fundamental interests.
A joint statement was also issued after Muizzu’s talks with top Chinese leaders. It said, ‘Both sides agree to continue to strongly support each other to protect their core interests.’
Appeal to send more tourists from China
During this, Maldives had also requested China to cooperate in ‘accelerating’ efforts to send more tourists to the island nation. Maldives President Muizzu also met his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on Wednesday (January 10). After this, 20 important agreements were also signed between the two countries.
