Whatever happens in Iran happens at the will of the Supreme Leader. Although there is a President and Vice President in Iran, the power control is with the Supreme Leader. The names of the candidates in the presidential election are also approved by the Supreme Leader. 290 members are elected in the Parliament
Every four years, 290 members of the Iranian Parliament are elected. The Parliament drafts laws and approves the country’s budget. However, the Parliament is controlled by the Guardian Council, which is an influential body. It examines all laws from the point of view of Sharia or Islamic law and can repeal the law. The Supreme Leader appoints half of the members of the Council. The Supreme Leader appoints the head of the judiciary. In India, the Election Commission is responsible for conducting elections, but in Iran, the Guardian Council conducts elections. It is a panel of 6 Islamic judges and 6 senior clerics under the supervision of the Supreme Leader. This panel examines the candidates wishing to contest the elections on technical and ideological grounds. This includes the level of education, commitment to Islam, the constitution and the values of the Islamic Republic.
