Power Tariff Hike: Not only are the economic conditions difficult in India’s neighbouring country Pakistan, but the prices and rates of goods and services are constantly increasing here. After the recent increase in the prices of petrol and diesel, now there are chances of electricity becoming expensive in Pakistan. Pakistan’s Federal Cabinet has approved a substantial increase of 5.72 Pakistani rupees per unit in the basic power tariff. After its implementation from July 1, the electricity tariff in the neighbouring country will increase to Rs 35.50 per unit.
Basic power tariff will increase
ARY News has claimed quoting sources that the Federal Cabinet of Pakistan has approved an increase of 5.72 Pakistani rupees per unit in the basic power tariff i.e. electricity rates. According to sources in the news published in the Economic Times, this decision will soon be sent to the National Electronic Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) in Pakistan and a notification will be issued to implement uniform tariffs across the country. Through this move, the Pak government aims to support the IMF bailout to cover the financial deficit despite consumer stress. The National Electronic Power Regulatory Authority has claimed in a report that Pakistan’s power sector has suffered a loss of $ 403 billion in the financial year 2022-23.
New electricity tariff rates will be considered effective from July 1
An application will be registered with NEPRA to increase the electricity tariff and this decision will be taken for the financial year 2024-25. It will be considered effective from July 1, 2024, after which the basic power tariff will increase from Rs 29.78 to 35.50 Pakistani rupees.
Petrol and diesel have already become expensive in Pakistan
In Pakistan, the price of petrol has been increased by Rs 7.45 per liter on July 1, after which petrol is being sold there at Rs 265.61 per liter. Apart from this, after the increase of Rs 9.60 per liter in the rate of diesel, the price of diesel has become Rs 277.49 per liter.
